Astra Theme Review 2026: Pricing, Astra Pro, Pros & Cons

Astra remains one of the most practical WordPress themes in 2026 for users who want a flexible foundation that works with Gutenberg, Spectra, Elementor, WooCommerce, and a large library of Starter Templates. The free theme is genuinely usable, while Astra Pro adds the theme-level controls that matter most for custom layouts, headers, footers, WooCommerce, white labeling, and more advanced design work.

The main complication is no longer whether Astra has enough features. It is understanding what you are actually buying. Brainstorm Force now sells Astra Pro on its own, Astra Pro + AI, and larger Toolkit bundles that add products such as Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, AI tools, and hosted-site extras.

This review separates those products so you can decide whether the free theme is enough, whether Astra Pro is worth paying for, or whether one of the broader bundles fits your workflow better.

Astra Theme Review: quick verdict

QuestionVerdict
Is Astra still worth using in 2026?Yes, especially if you want a flexible traditional WordPress theme that works with both the block editor and major page builders.
Is Astra Free enough? For many blogs, portfolios, business sites, and simpler projects, yes.
Is Astra Pro worth it?It becomes more useful when you need advanced headers and footers, Site Builder, broader design controls, WooCommerce features, white label, and premium support.
Is Astra Pro the same as the Toolkit plans? No. Astra Pro is the theme upgrade. Essential and Business Toolkit add other Brainstorm Force products and services.
Does Astra have a lifetime option?Yes. Current pricing includes lifetime options, including Astra Pro Addon Only and the broader bundles.
Is Astra the fastest WordPress theme? We do not make that claim without a controlled benchmark against equivalent configurations.
Best fitBloggers, businesses, freelancers, agencies, WooCommerce users, and Elementor or Gutenberg users who want a flexible theme layer.

Our practical recommendation: start with Astra Free if you are building a straightforward site. Choose the standalone Astra Pro Addon when the theme itself is what you need. Consider Essential or Business Toolkit only when the extra plugins, templates, AI workflow, or higher site limits will replace tools you would otherwise buy separately.

What is Astra?

Astra is a WordPress theme developed by Brainstorm Force. The core theme is free and available through WordPress.org, while Astra Pro is a separate plugin that extends the free theme with premium customization and site-building features.

As of September 1, 2026, WordPress.org lists Astra version 4.13.10 with more than one million active installations. The current Astra Pro changelog lists version 4.13.8, released in August 2026.

It is important to separate the products because the Astra ecosystem now extends beyond the theme itself:

  • Astra Free: the free WordPress theme.
  • Astra Pro: the premium addon that unlocks advanced theme features.
  • Spectra: Brainstorm Force’s block-based site-building plugin for the WordPress editor.
  • Starter Templates: an import system for prebuilt websites and pages, with free and premium templates.
  • Ultimate Addons for Elementor: an Elementor extension included in higher Toolkit plans, not in Astra Pro Addon Only.
  • Astra Pro + AI: Astra Pro combined with Brainstorm Force’s AI platform and selected hosted-site extras.
  • Essential Toolkit + AI: a broader package for freelancers managing more client sites.
  • Business Toolkit + AI: the larger agency-oriented package with higher site limits and additional products.

Astra Free vs Astra Pro

Astra Free is not merely a demo. It provides a functional theme foundation with layout, typography, color, header, footer, blog, and WooCommerce integration suitable for many ordinary WordPress sites.

Astra Pro becomes relevant when the limits of the free Customizer and theme controls begin to affect the design you are trying to build. The paid addon expands site layouts, colors, typography, headers, footers, blog controls, WooCommerce options, white labeling, and the Site Builder workflow.

For a simple site, paying for Pro just because it exists is unnecessary. Upgrade when a specific premium feature saves enough time or replaces custom code, another plugin, or a design limitation you actually have.

Astra pricing and renewal in 2026

Prices below were checked on September 1, 2026 on the official Astra pricing page. Prices are shown in U.S. dollars and can change after publication.

ProductCurrent priceWebsite limitKey point
Astra Free$0No paid license requiredCore theme
Astra Pro Addon Only$69/yearUp to 3 websitesAstra Pro without the larger bundle
Astra Pro Addon Only Lifetime$249 one-timeUp to 3 websitesNo recurring Astra Pro addon fee
Astra Pro + AI$99 first yearUp to 3 toolkit websitesRenews at $149/year; AI and hosted-site extras included under current terms
Essential Toolkit + AI$199 first yearUp to 10 websitesRenews at $299/year; adds Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, and Ultimate Addons for Elementor
Business Toolkit + AI$279 first yearUp to 1,000 websitesRenews at $429/year; adds agency-oriented tools and VIP support

The standalone Astra Pro Addon Only is the cleanest comparison for buyers who already have hosting and do not need the broader Brainstorm Force bundle. It is currently listed at $69 per year or $249 as a lifetime purchase, both for up to three websites.

The annual AI bundles use introductory pricing followed by higher renewal rates. Astra Pro + AI is currently $99 for the first year and renews at $149. Essential is $199 and renews at $299. Business is $279 and renews at $429.

Lifetime versions of the bundle plans are also currently offered at $279 for Astra Pro + AI, $549 for Essential Toolkit + AI, and $799 for Business Toolkit + AI. The important caveat is that the lifetime purchase applies to the WordPress toolkit products; current pricing terms state that the AI platform and included hosting run for three years, while the free domain is limited to the first year.

This distinction matters because a “lifetime” Toolkit purchase is not the same thing as receiving hosting, AI usage, and a domain forever at no additional cost.

Astra Pro features that matter most

Site Builder

Astra Pro’s Site Builder is one of the most meaningful upgrades over the free theme. It lets you create custom headers, footers, pages, posts, archive layouts, and WooCommerce layouts with theme-level display rules.

This is especially useful when you want different templates for different content types or sections of the site without editing PHP template files directly.

Header and footer controls

The Pro addon expands Astra’s header and footer capabilities with more styling and layout options. That matters for sites that need more complex navigation, sticky or advanced headers, custom footer structures, or more precise responsive behavior.

Colors, typography, spacing, and layouts

Astra Free already provides useful design controls, but Pro removes more of the boundaries around typography, spacing, backgrounds, blog layouts, site layouts, and other theme-level presentation details.

White label

White labeling is mainly relevant to freelancers and agencies. It lets you reduce Astra branding in the WordPress admin experience when handing a site to a client.

Starter Templates and the Astra ecosystem

Starter Templates are a major part of Astra’s appeal because they reduce the amount of design work required before a site begins to look complete. The free Starter Templates plugin includes a free tier, while the current Toolkit plans advertise access to more than 300 premium templates across multiple niches.

Templates are available for different workflows, including the WordPress block editor through Spectra and Elementor-based sites. You can import a complete site or use templates as a starting point and replace the design, copy, images, typography, and colors with your own.

The main buying mistake is assuming that every Astra template is included with the standalone $69 Astra Pro addon. Premium Starter Templates are part of the larger Toolkit offering, while the Addon Only option focuses on the theme’s premium features.

Astra with Gutenberg, Spectra, and Elementor

Astra’s flexibility comes from not forcing one page-building workflow. You can use the native WordPress block editor, extend it with Spectra, or pair the theme with Elementor and other supported page builders.

For a Gutenberg-first site, Astra plus Spectra provides a relatively integrated Brainstorm Force stack. Spectra Pro is not included with Astra Pro Addon Only, but it is included in the Essential and Business Toolkit plans.

For Elementor users, Astra remains a popular underlying theme because the page builder can handle page design while Astra manages the broader theme layer. The higher Toolkits include Ultimate Addons for Elementor, but they do not include Elementor Pro itself.

If Elementor is the center of your buying decision rather than the theme, our Elementor Review 2026 covers its current product structure and pricing in more detail.

Astra performance considerations

Web Choice Desk has not run a controlled Astra benchmark for this review. We therefore do not claim that Astra is universally faster than GeneratePress, Kadence, Divi, Bricks, or another theme.

Astra is positioned by its developer and WordPress.org listing as a lightweight, performance-oriented theme. That is useful context, but it is not equivalent to measuring a production site built with a real theme configuration, page builder, plugins, images, fonts, analytics scripts, WooCommerce features, and hosting stack.

In practice, the final performance result depends on much more than the base theme: hosting, PHP resources, caching, CDN configuration, page-builder output, third-party scripts, database workload, image optimization, fonts, and the complexity of the templates you build all matter.

Astra’s advantage is that it can serve as a relatively restrained theme layer. Whether the completed website stays lightweight depends on the choices made above that layer.

Astra for WooCommerce

Astra Free integrates with WooCommerce and gives store elements a design that follows the theme’s broader typography and color settings. Astra Pro adds the more interesting ecommerce controls.

Current Astra Pro documentation includes additional product layouts, product quick view, gallery options, Ajax add-to-cart controls, cart presentation options, checkout customization, quantity controls, and other WooCommerce settings.

That makes Astra Pro useful when you want more store design control without turning the theme into the ecommerce platform itself. WooCommerce performance, payment processing, product filtering, inventory, checkout extensions, server resources, and database workload remain separate concerns.

For a small or medium WooCommerce site, Astra can be a sensible presentation layer. For a complex store, evaluate the entire commerce and hosting stack rather than treating the theme as the main performance decision.

Astra for developers, freelancers, and agencies

The current licensing structure creates a clear divide between small-site users and agencies. Astra Pro Addon Only and Astra Pro + AI cover up to three sites. Essential Toolkit raises that to 10. Business Toolkit raises the WordPress Toolkit limit to 1,000 websites.

The official pricing FAQ says client sites count toward those limits and that staging and development environments also count as sites. That detail is important for agencies because a 10-site license can be consumed quickly when each client project has separate staging or development installations.

Business Toolkit becomes easier to justify when you manage many sites and would separately use Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, SureForms Agency, AI planning tools, and higher-priority support. If you only need Astra Pro, the standalone addon is much easier to understand and far less expensive.

Support, updates, and refund policy

The current Astra pricing page includes premium support with paid plans and advertises a 14-day money-back guarantee. The larger Business Toolkit is positioned with VIP support, while the other paid plans list priority or premium support depending on the product.

We have not run a controlled support-response test for this review, so we do not publish response-time measurements or rate Astra support based on an interaction we did not perform.

Annual plans require renewal to continue receiving the paid updates and support included with the license. Lifetime plans remove the recurring fee for the WordPress toolkit products covered by that lifetime purchase, but the current AI, hosting, and domain extras have their own time limits and should be evaluated separately.

Astra pros and cons

Pros

  • A capable free theme with more than one million active installations on WordPress.org.
  • Works with the native block editor, Spectra, Elementor, WooCommerce, and other common WordPress workflows.
  • Astra Pro Addon Only gives buyers a simpler option without forcing a larger bundle.
  • Lifetime Astra Pro and Toolkit options are currently available.
  • Site Builder provides theme-level control over headers, footers, archives, posts, and WooCommerce layouts.
  • Strong library of Starter Templates, including free options and 300+ premium templates in current Toolkit plans.
  • Useful WooCommerce customization in Astra Pro.
  • White-label capability is useful for agencies.
  • Business Toolkit’s 1,000-site limit can fit larger agency workflows.

Cons

  • The current product lineup is more complicated than simply choosing between Free and Pro.
  • Astra Pro Addon Only is limited to three websites under the current public pricing.
  • Staging and development installations count toward Toolkit website limits.
  • Premium Starter Templates and Spectra Pro require the larger Toolkit plans rather than the standalone Astra Pro addon.
  • Annual AI bundle prices increase at renewal.
  • “Lifetime” Toolkit does not mean lifetime AI, hosting, and domain service under the current terms.
  • Users who want a complete visual builder in one product may prefer Elementor, Bricks, or another builder-centered workflow.

Who should use Astra?

  • Beginners who want a free theme with a large ecosystem and prebuilt templates.
  • Bloggers and publishers who want a traditional WordPress theme with useful layout and typography controls.
  • Small businesses that need a flexible theme without adopting a proprietary visual builder for every page.
  • Elementor users who want a theme layer that works well underneath the builder.
  • Gutenberg and Spectra users who want to stay close to the WordPress block editor.
  • WooCommerce site owners who want additional store design controls through Astra Pro.
  • Freelancers and agencies who can make practical use of Starter Templates, white label, Site Builder, and the higher Toolkit site limits.

Who should skip Astra?

  • Users whose free-theme requirements are already fully covered and who would not use any Pro feature.
  • Agencies that need more than three sites but do not want the more expensive Toolkit structure.
  • Buyers who assume Premium Starter Templates or Spectra Pro are included with the $69 Astra Pro Addon Only license.
  • Users who want a single integrated visual builder rather than a theme that can be paired with several different editors.
  • Buyers choosing a lifetime Toolkit primarily for AI or hosting without accounting for the current three-year limit on those services.

Astra alternatives

GeneratePress is the most direct traditional-theme alternative if you value a lean Gutenberg-first workflow and a simpler premium product structure. Our GeneratePress Review 2026 covers GP Premium, licensing, Theme Builder, and the broader GeneratePress ecosystem.

Elementor is the more obvious choice when the visual page builder itself is the center of the workflow. Read our Elementor Review 2026 for its current pricing and product structure.

Bricks takes a more integrated approach because the visual builder is also the theme. Our Bricks Builder Review 2026 explains its dynamic data, components, theme building, and licensing.

Divi is worth evaluating if a visual builder, large design ecosystem, and lifetime licensing are more important than keeping a conventional theme-plus-editor structure. Our Divi Review 2026 explains the current Elegant Themes offering.

Astra Theme Review: final verdict

Astra remains an easy WordPress theme to recommend conditionally in 2026 because the free version is useful, the Pro addon solves real theme-level limitations, and the ecosystem supports several different ways of building a site.

For a single simple website, start with Astra Free. There is little reason to pay until you need a specific Pro capability.

For up to three sites where the theme features are the main requirement, Astra Pro Addon Only is the most straightforward paid option. It avoids paying for a broader bundle you may not use and currently offers both annual and lifetime pricing.

Essential Toolkit becomes more interesting for freelancers who will actually use Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, and the 10-site allowance. Business Toolkit is aimed much more clearly at agencies that need a significantly higher site limit and the broader Brainstorm Force workflow.

The main caution is product complexity. Compare the theme license, Toolkit site limit, introductory price, renewal, lifetime conditions, and the separate time limits on AI, hosting, and domain extras before choosing a plan.

And as with GeneratePress, we would not buy Astra based on a universal speed claim. A lightweight theme helps, but the completed site’s performance is determined by the whole WordPress stack.

Frequently asked questions

Is Astra free?

Yes. The core Astra theme is available free from WordPress.org. Astra Pro is a separate paid addon that extends the free theme with advanced design, Site Builder, WooCommerce, white-label, and other premium controls.

How much does Astra Pro cost in 2026?

The standalone Astra Pro Addon Only is currently listed at $69 per year or $249 as a one-time lifetime purchase for up to three websites. Astra also sells broader AI and Toolkit plans with different introductory, renewal, lifetime, product, and site-limit terms. Prices were checked on September 1, 2026 and can change.

Does Astra have a lifetime license?

Yes. Astra currently offers lifetime purchases. The standalone Astra Pro Addon Only is listed at $249 one-time for up to three websites, and the broader Toolkit plans also have lifetime options. For Toolkit purchases, current terms distinguish lifetime WordPress toolkit products from AI and hosted-site services that run for a limited period.

Does Astra Pro include Spectra Pro and Premium Starter Templates?

Not in the standalone Astra Pro Addon Only plan. Spectra Pro and Premium Starter Templates are included in the current Essential Toolkit and Business Toolkit plans. The free Starter Templates plugin also has a free template tier.

Is Astra good for Elementor?

Yes. Astra is designed to work with major page builders including Elementor. The theme can manage the site-wide theme layer while Elementor handles page design. Higher Astra Toolkit plans include Ultimate Addons for Elementor, but they do not include Elementor Pro itself.

Is Astra faster than GeneratePress?

We do not declare a winner without an equivalent controlled benchmark. Both are positioned as lightweight WordPress themes, but real site performance depends on hosting, plugins, page-builder output, fonts, images, caching, third-party scripts, database workload, and the complexity of the site.
