The main complication is no longer whether Astra has enough features. It is understanding what you are actually buying. Our practical recommendation: start with Astra Free if you are building a straightforward site. Choose the standalone Astra Pro Addon when the theme itself is what you need. Consider Essential or Business Toolkit only when the extra plugins, templates, AI workflow, or higher site limits will replace tools you would otherwise buy separately.

What is Astra?

Astra is a WordPress theme developed by Brainstorm Force. The core theme is free and available through WordPress.org, while Astra Pro is a separate plugin that extends the free theme with premium customization and site-building features.

As of September 1, 2026, WordPress.org lists Astra version 4.13.10 with more than one million active installations. The current Astra Pro changelog lists version 4.13.8, released in August 2026.

It is important to separate the products because the Astra ecosystem now extends beyond the theme itself:

• Astra Free: the free WordPress theme.
• Astra Pro: the premium addon that unlocks advanced theme features.
• Spectra: Brainstorm Force’s block-based site-building plugin for the WordPress editor.

Astra Pro becomes relevant when the limits of the free Customizer and theme controls begin to affect the design you are trying to build. The paid addon expands site layouts, colors, typography, headers, footers, blog controls, WooCommerce options, white labeling, and the Site Builder workflow.

For a simple site, paying for Pro just because it exists is unnecessary. Upgrade when a specific premium feature saves enough time or replaces custom code, another plugin, or a design limitation you actually have.

Astra pricing and renewal in 2026

Prices below were checked on September 1, 2026 on the official Astra pricing page. Prices are shown in U.S. dollars and can change after publication.

The standalone Astra Pro Addon Only is the cleanest comparison for buyers who already have hosting and do not need the broader Brainstorm Force bundle. It is currently listed at $69 per year or $249 as a lifetime purchase, both for up to three websites.

The annual AI bundles use introductory pricing followed by higher renewal rates. Astra Pro + AI is currently $99 for the first year and renews at $149. Essential is $199 and renews at $299. Business is $279 and renews at $429.

Lifetime versions of the bundle plans are also currently offered at $279 for Astra Pro + AI, $549 for Essential Toolkit + AI, and $799 for Business Toolkit + AI. The important caveat is that the lifetime purchase applies to the WordPress toolkit products; current pricing terms state that the AI platform and included hosting run for three years, while the free domain is limited to the first year.

This distinction matters because a “lifetime” Toolkit purchase is not the same thing as receiving hosting, AI usage, and a domain forever at no additional cost.

Astra Pro features that matter most

Site Builder

Astra Pro’s Site Builder is one of the most meaningful upgrades over the free theme. It lets you create custom headers, footers, pages, posts, archive layouts, and WooCommerce layouts with theme-level display rules.

This is especially useful when you want different templates for different content types or sections of the site without editing PHP template files directly.

Header and footer controls

The Pro addon expands Astra’s header and footer capabilities with more styling and layout options. That matters for sites that need more complex navigation, sticky or advanced headers, custom footer structures, or more precise responsive behavior.

Colors, typography, spacing, and layouts

Astra Free already provides useful design controls, but Pro removes more of the boundaries around typography, spacing, backgrounds, blog layouts, site layouts, and other theme-level presentation details.

White labeling is mainly relevant to freelancers and agencies. It lets you reduce Astra branding in the WordPress admin experience when handing a site to a client.

The main buying mistake is assuming that every Astra template is included with the standalone $69 Astra Pro addon. Premium Starter Templates are part of the larger Toolkit offering, while the Addon Only option focuses on the theme’s premium features.

Astra with Gutenberg, Spectra, and Elementor

Astra’s flexibility comes from not forcing one page-building workflow. You can use the native WordPress block editor, extend it with Spectra, or pair the theme with Elementor and other supported page builders.

For a Gutenberg-first site, Astra plus Spectra provides a relatively integrated Brainstorm Force stack. Spectra Pro is not included with Astra Pro Addon Only, but it is included in the Essential and Business Toolkit plans.

For Elementor users, Astra remains a popular underlying theme because the page builder can handle page design while Astra manages the broader theme layer. The higher Toolkits include Ultimate Addons for Elementor, but they do not include Elementor Pro itself.

Astra performance considerations

Web Choice Desk has not run a controlled Astra benchmark for this review. We therefore do not claim that Astra is universally faster than GeneratePress, Kadence, Divi, Bricks, or another theme.

Astra is positioned by its developer and WordPress.org listing as a lightweight, performance-oriented theme. That is useful context, but it is not equivalent to measuring a production site built with a real theme configuration, page builder, plugins, images, fonts, analytics scripts, WooCommerce features, and hosting stack.

In practice, the final performance result depends on much more than the base theme: hosting, PHP resources, caching, CDN configuration, page-builder output, third-party scripts, database workload, image optimization, fonts, and the complexity of the templates you build all matter.

Astra’s advantage is that it can serve as a relatively restrained theme layer. Whether the completed website stays lightweight depends on the choices made above that layer.

Astra for WooCommerce

Astra Free integrates with WooCommerce and gives store elements a design that follows the theme’s broader typography and color settings. Astra Pro adds the more interesting ecommerce controls.

Current Astra Pro documentation includes additional product layouts, product quick view, gallery options, Ajax add-to-cart controls, cart presentation options, checkout customization, quantity controls, and other WooCommerce settings.

That makes Astra Pro useful when you want more store design control without turning the theme into the ecommerce platform itself. WooCommerce performance, payment processing, product filtering, inventory, checkout extensions, server resources, and database workload remain separate concerns.

For a small or medium WooCommerce site, Astra can be a sensible presentation layer. For a complex store, evaluate the entire commerce and hosting stack rather than treating the theme as the main performance decision.

Astra for developers, freelancers, and agencies

The current licensing structure creates a clear divide between small-site users and agencies. Astra Pro Addon Only and Astra Pro + AI cover up to three sites. Essential Toolkit raises that to 10. Business Toolkit raises the WordPress Toolkit limit to 1,000 websites.

The official pricing FAQ says client sites count toward those limits and that staging and development environments also count as sites. That detail is important for agencies because a 10-site license can be consumed quickly when each client project has separate staging or development installations.

Business Toolkit becomes easier to justify when you manage many sites and would separately use Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, SureForms Agency, AI planning tools, and higher-priority support. If you only need Astra Pro, the standalone addon is much easier to understand and far less expensive.

Support, updates, and refund policy

The current Astra pricing page includes premium support with paid plans and advertises a 14-day money-back guarantee. The larger Business Toolkit is positioned with VIP support, while the other paid plans list priority or premium support depending on the product.

We have not run a controlled support-response test for this review, so we do not publish response-time measurements or rate Astra support based on an interaction we did not perform.

Annual plans require renewal to continue receiving the paid updates and support included with the license. Lifetime plans remove the recurring fee for the WordPress toolkit products covered by that lifetime purchase, but the current AI, hosting, and domain extras have their own time limits and should be evaluated separately.

For a single simple website, start with Astra Free. There is little reason to pay until you need a specific Pro capability.

For up to three sites where the theme features are the main requirement, Astra Pro Addon Only is the most straightforward paid option. It avoids paying for a broader bundle you may not use and currently offers both annual and lifetime pricing.

Essential Toolkit becomes more interesting for freelancers who will actually use Spectra Pro, Premium Starter Templates, Ultimate Addons for Elementor, and the 10-site allowance. Business Toolkit is aimed much more clearly at agencies that need a significantly higher site limit and the broader Brainstorm Force workflow.

The main caution is product complexity. Compare the theme license, Toolkit site limit, introductory price, renewal, lifetime conditions, and the separate time limits on AI, hosting, and domain extras before choosing a plan.

And as with GeneratePress, we would not buy Astra based on a universal speed claim. A lightweight theme helps, but the completed site’s performance is determined by the whole WordPress stack.
